What is a Contributor Day?
Open source projects primarily run on volunteer power for all aspects of the project – including the design, development, testing, marketing, and support. Contributor Days are common in the WordPress open source community. The “flagship”, or large region-based, WordCamps like WordCamp Asia, Europe, and US typically host a WordPress Contributor Day before or after the main event. These events are designed to be a great entry point for new contributors to open source, as well as a good opportunity for experienced contributors to set aside time to work on the project. As with any large event, there is a lot of organization and prep work behind the scenes to ensure the event runs smoothly.
Contributing to WooCommerce
The WooCommerce team did a wonderful job preparing the community for the event, especially with announcements on their developer blog/newsletter and providing the WooCommerce Contributor Day Guide.
One of our WordPress experts had the following to say about the support WooCommerce provided:
As a WordPress developer, contributing to WooCommerce was a significant step for me, and I found the experience to be incredibly beneficial. The team provided detailed documentation and helpful guides that made it possible for me to navigate the complex codebase and contribute meaningfully to the project. I was even more impressed by the team’s willingness to collaborate and work together to make WooCommerce even better.

Improvements to WooCommerce
WooCommerce hosted their contributor day to work on open issues in the WooCommerce Core and WooCommerce Blocks repositories. During this 24-hour period, Codeable experts worked on issues related to accessibility, internationalization, the plugin’s extensibility, and translations.
Having worked on WordPress core a lot, it was nice to look at another open source project and to see how they had created the build environment and see how the Woo team ran their project. I was able to spend some time looking at a11y/i18n issues. I found that it was good to be reminded of how we need to add support for other languages and screen readers in our code. I wish I had more time to do more 🙁

Benefits of Contributing
Open source software is created and maintained by many contributors who often volunteer their time. They see the value in giving back to the software and community that has empowered them to build better websites. Oftentimes, the best way to learn about a software is to work on it yourself! WordPress itself is one of the biggest open source projects with thousands of contributors across many teams – including many of our experts.
I am passionate about open-source development, and I believe that contributing to WooCommerce is an excellent opportunity for me to improve my skills as a developer while helping to make the platform even better.
